Is it time to rethink school uniform?

For generations, the traditional school uniform has been a defining feature of education in the UK. Blazers, shirts and ties remain an important part of school identity, helping to create a sense of pride, belonging and professionalism among students.

However, as schools continue to evolve, so too do their expectations of what a uniform should deliver.

Across the education sector, there is increasing discussion around comfort, wellbeing, inclusivity and the practical demands placed on students throughout the school day. Today's pupils are often moving between classrooms, sports facilities, enrichment activities and extracurricular programmes, leading some schools to review whether traditional uniform models continue to meet every aspect of modern school life.

As a result, some schools are exploring more contemporary uniform approaches that incorporate sports-inspired garments, performance fabrics and greater flexibility throughout the school day. While this does not necessarily mean replacing traditional uniform altogether, it does reflect a growing interest in clothing that can support both learning and movement.

Performance-led fabrics can offer a number of practical benefits, including improved comfort, durability and ease of care. Modern technical materials are often designed to withstand the demands of active school environments while maintaining a smart and consistent appearance.

For schools, the challenge is often finding the right balance. Uniform remains an important expression of school culture and standards, while students, parents and staff increasingly value comfort and practicality.

What is clear is that there is no single model that suits every school. Some will continue to favour a highly traditional approach, while others may choose to introduce elements of sports-inspired uniform within their wider offering. Many are likely to adopt a blend of both.

At Surridge Sport, we work closely with schools across the UK and continue to see innovation in both traditional uniform and sportswear programmes. The most successful approaches are often those that reflect the unique culture, aspirations and needs of each individual school community.
